Visual Attention and Recognition Differences Based on Expertise in a Map Reading and Memorability Study

This study investigates how expert and novice map users’ attention is influenced by the design characteristics of 2D web maps building sharing a framework to analyze large volumes eye tracking data. Our goal respond following research questions: (i) which landmarks are easily remembered? (memorability), (ii) task difficulty recognition performance associated? (task difficulty), (iii) do experts novices differ in terms performance? (expertise). In this context, we developed an automated area-of-interest (AOI) analysis evaluate participants’ fixation durations, assess influence linear polygonal features on spatial memory. results demonstrate task-relevant patterns all participants, better selective allocation experts. However, overall, observe that type feature mattered more than expertise when remembering content. Predominantly such as hydrographic areas road junctions serve attentive reading memorability. We make our dataset entitled CartoGAZE publicly available.
